Paid Research Opportunity for Children and Young People with Justice Experience

Challenge Justice are currently recruiting participants for a Youth Advisory Group (YAG) who will play a central role in co-producing this research over the next 18 months. Specifically, we are looking for 10 children aged 14-17 who have had justice experience and are passionate about contributing to positive change. The Youth Advisory Group will work closely with our team to design, develop, and execute the project, which will ultimately involve up to 50 other children and young people. The advisory group is a big commitment. Sessions will take place in Glasgow regularly for up to 18 months. The group will be reimbursed (bank transfer/vouchers) for their time/involvement. We are also working with Young Scot and Youth Link regarding certification and SCQF credits for involvement.

What Young People can Expect:
We will work with the YAG to help us understand how things like poverty, age, race, sexuality, gender, disability or religion affect children’s experiences of the justice system. We also want to find out what things might help different groups of children to be treated more fairly and equally by the justice system. Together we will design a research project on this topic for other children and young people to explore their views and experiences of justice inequalities. You don’t need to know anything about research to take part in the YAG as we will provide training and support. In the YAG sessions we will do different activities to help us understand what it is like to be a child involved with the justice system, and what things affect children’s experiences of the justice system. We will decide with the YAG exactly what these activities are, so hopefully you will find them fun or interesting.
Activities might include: taking photos, drawing pictures, making online posters, building things out of Lego or other materials, creating music, storytelling, taking part in discussions, recording voice notes etc. The YAG will also learn a little bit about what research is and how to do research. We will then use our learning from each other to design a research project for other children. You do not need to have any special knowledge, skills or equipment to take part. We hope that the sessions will be fun and interesting and you will get to meet new people, or learn new skills. We also hope that the research we do might help to change things for children in the justice system in the future, but we can’t promise it will. You will have the opportunity to get a Participative Democracy Certificate (worth 2 credits at SCQF Level 5) but you do not need to do this. You will receive compensation in cash or vouchers for taking part.
