Soundz Music Project is a fun and engaging music project for young people living in Lanark.
The project started back in 2021 through funding from the Youth Music Initiative to offer basic music tuition to young people and was open to all. Participants were discovered through advertising with local schools and partners in the area. This allowed us to book tutors and get some musical equipment for the young people to use. We were also gifted some preloved instruments on permanent loan from the charity 12 Guitars in Glasgow to allow young people to own their first musical instruments.
Since the funding period ended, the group moved on to learning to play as a band and with other musicians. Young people from the group have performed at the Youth Family and Community Learning Awards night as well as at local events in Lanark.
The group meet on Thursday nights at Lanark Universal Connections to continue to learn and develop as young musicians. The group is open to new members. Although our staff have years of experience playing instruments and youth work, we aren’t best placed to teach young people how to play their chosen instruments to any graded levels, but are able to guide and support learning as well as encourage participants to work on their skills in a fun and engaging environment.
