Join Heriot-Watt University’s Youth Advisory Panel (YAP)!

Curious about technology and where it’s heading? We’d love to hear your thoughts!

The University is recruiting members for its new Youth Advisory Panel (YAP) – a chance for young people to help shape how research is shared, discussed and developed with communities. We invite applications from people based in Edinburgh and West Lothian, aged 16 to 18-years-old.

You don’t need a background in science, technology or research. If you’re curious and interested in how technology affects everyday life, that’s all the experience you need to get involved!

What You’ll Do:

  • Take part in 6 interactive workshops across September 2026 to January 2027
  • Share your experiences, ideas and opinions
  • Help researchers understand what matters to young people
  • Influence future public engagement activities and research approaches
  • Discuss topics such as:

o Emerging technologies

o Ongoing research

o The future of technology

Why get Involved:

  • Travel and hospitality (snacks!) costs covered
  • Visit behind the scenes spaces such as The National Robotarium
  • Have a real say in how research engages with young people
  • Meet researchers, from PhD students to Professors
  • Learn about cutting-edge research and future technologies
  • Build your confidence discussing science and technology
  • Receive support, resources and guidance throughout
  • Meet an artist-in-residence who will be supporting the project
  • Get a thank-you voucher for your time and contributions

What’s Involved:

  • Workshops last around 1.5 (online)–3 hours (in person) and will be a mix of in person and virtual via Zoom
  • A relaxed, welcoming environment where all views are valued
  • No prior knowledge required – just bring your perspective and thoughts
  • This project will be part of ongoing and future research
  • You can find out more information about previous work by the YAP here.

A Light Touch Commitment

The Youth Advisory Panel is designed to fit around your existing commitments. You’ll take part in six workshops over the programme and have the chance to contribute to conversations that could help shape future research and engagement activities.

Your experience matters. Your voice matters. Join the conversation and help shape the future.

The closing date for this opportunity is 14 September.
