Finding a Local Food Bank in Scotland

If you or your family are struggling with money right now, you’re not alone. There’s support out there to help you access food, essentials, and someone to talk to. Here’s a quick guide to finding a food bank, what to expect, and why it’s completely ok to use one.

Questions You Might Have

What’s a food bank?

A food bank provides free emergency food parcels and essential items if you’re finding it hard to afford food.

Do I need a referral?

Many food banks in Scotland do ask for a referral voucher. You can get one through places like:

How do I find my nearest one?

  • Check your local council website for food support in your area
  • Citizens Advice Scotland can help you find a food bank and explain how to get a referral

Some areas also have food pantries and community shops where you can choose food at low cost without a referral.

Can they deliver?

Some food banks may be able to deliver if you can’t travel – just ask when you contact them.

Other Support You Can Get

Money or benefits advice

If you’re unsure whether you’re getting all the support you’re entitled to, Citizens Advice Scotland can help you with benefits, grants and income checks.

Crisis help

The Scottish Welfare Fund offers Crisis Grants to help with essentials like food. If you’re not eligible, you can still be referred to a food bank.

Your Mental Health Matters Too

Struggling to afford food can feel stressful, embarrassing or overwhelming but these feelings are normal, and you don’t have to deal with them by yourself. It’s ok to ask for help!

Food banks exist because lots of people need support at different times in their lives. Reaching out doesn’t mean you’ve failed, it means you’re looking after yourself and the people you care about.

Talk to someone you trust

Whether it’s a friend, a family member, a support worker or a helpline, sharing how you’re feeling can make things feel lighter.

Where to Start

Here are some good first steps:

Everyone needs a bit of help sometimes, and there’s absolutely no shame in using the support available. Whether you need food, advice or someone to talk to, there are people and places ready to help you through tough times. You’ve got options, and you’ve got support – whenever you need it.
