About this opportunity
The Curriculum Improvement Cycle (CIC) is a 10-year plan led by Education Scotland to review, improve and update Scotland’s national curriculum.
Young Scot is looking for a small group of young people aged 11–18 to help create new, easy-to-understand resources that explain what the Curriculum Improvement Cycle (CIC) is and the changes being made through it.
Working with Young Scot’s youth participation team, YSHive, you’ll help turn existing information into content that is clear, engaging and designed with young people in mind.
You’ll work alongside other young people, share your ideas directly with Education Scotland and help make sure these resources are useful and accessible for everyone. This will include one in-person creative workshop and one online feedback session.
What you’ll do
As part of the project, you’ll:
- Review the current Curriculum Improvement Cycle resources, which are mainly written for adults.
- Share ideas to help make the information clearer, more engaging and easier for young people to understand.
- Work with other young people and Young Scot staff, including our Content and Communications team.
- Suggest the best ways to share these resources with young people, teachers and others involved in education.
- Give feedback on the designs, resources and the overall project with Education Scotland and Young Scot.
Skills Development
As well as the opportunity to meet a group of like-minded young people and be part of making change within education, you will also have the chance to work on and develop a range of skills throughout the process. This focuses on key skills, integral to the volunteer experience at Young Scot. These are:
- Communication
- Teamwork
- Confidence
- Awareness
- Decision-making
- Innovation
We will provide you with more detail on the above skills, provide space for you to have conversations with staff about your development and help you to build confidence to talk about these in future settings.

You don’t need to have any experience to sign up. However, it would be great if you’re interested in education and helping to improve how Education Scotland make their materials on the curriculum youth-friendly and accessible.
We are happy to make reasonable adjustments to help you take part based on your needs. All young people are welcome at Young Scot including those with disabilities, neurodiversity, queer young people and ethnic minorities.
We’re keen to collaborate with young people who can sometimes have more barriers to taking part in opportunities due to their personal circumstances. This includes ethnic minorities, disabled young people, young carers, care-experienced young people, and young people who live in low-income households.
