Being There for a Friend Facing Gambling Addiction

Gambling doesn’t always look like casinos and poker tables anymore. These days it’s incredibly easy to access betting apps, crypto trading and in-game loot boxes all from our phones.

Have you ever seen a mate or family member get sucked in? Or they’re impacted in a way that starts affecting their mood, your friendship or their bank account? If you are worried about how much someone you know is gambling but terrified of making things awkward, here is a quick guide for stepping up without pushing them away.

Spot the signs

Because a lot of gambling happens on a phone, it can be harder to spot than if your pal just went into the bookies. But there is a few things you might notice…

  • They’re constantly checking scores for matches, or spending more time on games during hangs.
  • Bailing on group plans, especially ones that cost money, but still finding cash to bet.
  • They might brag intensely about their wins but will not mention or want to discuss their losses.

Having a Conversation

Opening a discussion with them can be easier said than done. You don’t want to just call them out about their actions or they could get defensive and distance themselves from you.

  • Check in with them – Sometimes its as simple as asking how they’re doing, if you’ve noticed them acting differently you can also mention that.
  • Wait for an opportunity – If they bring up their recent bets you might find a chance to step in and say how you’ve noticed it’s been affecting them, even simply asking if everything is okay can go a long way.

Be careful about lending money to a friend who is gambling frequently. If they ask you to cover something financially, try and do it in-person where you can be sure the money is going where it needs to rather than on more bets.

Getting Support

  • A great first step it to try and limit any spending. Many Scottish banks offer features to block gambling transactions, find out more here.
  • You can try Gamban, an app that helps block many gambling websites and apps.

You can only help so much, that’s why there’s organisations out there that offer advice, resources and support.

You can find a list of some of the key organisations available to help in Scotland on the Know The Odds homepage.
