Project information

🎂 11 to 18 Years
📅 June 2021 - July 2022
🗺️ Anywhere in Scotland

This project will be run on ️ Zoom (online) for now, however you don't need a Zoom account to participate. Travel, food and accommodation will be paid for if we return to being able to deliver face-to-face events, and digital support is available.

The Panel will collaborate with Education Scotland’s Oversight Board to ensure the United Nation Convention of the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is embedded throughout their work and that young people’s voices are at the heart of decision making in order to make a difference to the experiences of children and young people in education.

About the Young People’s Strategic Panel

On this #YSHive project, the group will be supported to develop a deeper understanding of Education Scotland and will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with staff to review how decisions are made and young people are engaged within the organisation.

You will join a small team of young people for the 12-month project, working in four different stages to gather views, work together to come up with solutions, test ideas and put them into action

You will be supported by our staff team throughout the process to tackle challenges and ensure that Education Scotland’s delivery works for all young people. Throughout you will be working with different Education Scotland teams to support the incorporation of the UNCRC and to ensure that young people’s voices are embedded into any decision making

No previous experience is needed to take part as we will guide you through everything you need to know

What you'll do as part of Young People's Strategic Panel

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this project will take place online for the foreseeable future. However, we understand getting online can be difficult, so please still apply if you have limited access as we can support you with alternative arrangements.

We will work together to create a supportive and inclusive team, with opportunities to learn a range of skills and meet new people from across Scotland.

Supported by Young Scot staff, volunteers will meet regularly (online using Zoom) and work on remote activities to review progress, provide insight and ideas and deliver recommendations to Education Scotland about the development and implementation of internal processes

As a #YSHive volunteer you will sometimes be invited to join extra workshops and activities with Young Scot on different topics, but these are optional.

Volunteering with Young Scot

Joining the Young People’s Strategic Panel means you will be joining a supportive and inclusive team, with opportunities to learn a range of skills, take part in training, and develop confidence in yourself.

A dedicated Young Scot staff member will support you throughout your volunteering experience.

We are happy to make reasonable adjustments to enable all young people to take part, and there will be an opportunity when you apply to tell us about any support or adjustments you need to contribute fully.

We will ensure we are a safe and trusted place for you to volunteer. We do not accept any form of discrimination or prejudice to anyone on our volunteering projects based on your life experience, background, culture, or identity. This includes age, disability, gender identity, parenting and caring responsibilities, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation.

Next steps

After you’ve applied, we will invite you along to a Taster & Selection Workshop on Zoom. This is to give you a taste of what volunteering with YSHive might be like, and for us to meet you.  If you can’t attend for any reason, we will arrange a phone or video call with you.

If we have more applicants than there are spots on the Panel, we will also reflect on how things went at the Taster & Selection Session to make a decision about who to invite to join Young People’s Strategic Panel.
