About the Project

On this #YSHive project, the group willwork together to help improve volunteering for young people in Scotland. You will be supported by our staff team to think about the how we can fulfill the ideas of one of our previous groups' the Youth Volunteering Innovation (YouthVIP) project, delivered in partnership between Young Scot and Project Scotland

No previous experience is needed to take part, as we will guide you through everything you need to know.

You’ll join a team of young people to share your ideas and thoughts about how we can action the ideas the YouthVIP group came up with. In fact, setting up this Youth Volunteering Legacy Group was one of their key ideas!

You will help to guide Young Scot, YouthLink Scotland, Scottish Government and Project Scotland in developing volunteering for young people in Scotland. You will ensure the rights and needs of young people are at the heart of this process.

The YouthVIP group identified themes around the experiences of young volunteers, and barriers for them and their peers to take part in volunteering. From these, they created thirteen recommendations to encourage more young people to volunteer and to improve the experience of those who currently do.

The Scottish Government has since accepted all the recommendations. This will help to reduce barriers to volunteering for young people in Scotland. It will also ensure that young people from all backgrounds get access to the life changing benefits of volunteering.

About Volunteering with Young Scot & YouthLink Scotland

Joining the Youth Volunteering Youth Legacy Group means you will be joining a supportive and inclusive team, with opportunities to learn a range of skills, meet new people from across Scotland, take part in training, and develop confidence in yourself.

No special experience or skills are necessary to take part, and you don’t need to know anything about the work of YouthVIP or volunteering. You don’t need to have any previous experience volunteering either!

Dedicated staff members at YouthLink Scotland and Young Scot will support you to take part.

We are happy to make reasonable adjustments to enable all young people to take part, and there will be an opportunity when you apply to tell us about any support or adjustments you need in order to contribute fully.

We will ensure we are a safe and trusted place for you to volunteer.

We do not accept any form of discrimination or prejudice to anyone on our volunteering projects based on your life experience, background, culture, or identity. This includes age, disability, gender identity, parenting and caring responsibilities, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation.

What will you do on this project?

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this project will take place online for the foreseeable future. However, we understand getting online can be difficult, so please still apply if you have limited access as we can support you with alternative arrangements.

The Youth Volunteering Legacy Group will meet every 4-6 weeks for workshops with YouthLink Scotland and Young Scot where you will take part in small group activities and discussions about the issues at hand.  There may also be some additional opportunities offered as part of the project.

You will have the opportunity to speak directly with decision-makers to have your say on the things that are important to you around youth volunteering and youth empowerment in Scotland.

As a #YSHive volunteer you will sometimes be invited to join extra workshops and activities with Young Scot on different topics, but these are optional.

If you would like to be part of the Youth Volunteering Legacy Group, then you can apply online via Alchemer or by using the downloadable application form.

Apply to join the Youth Volunteering Legacy Group

Applications must be submitted by noon on Wednesday 24th February.

We will also accept verbal applications made using video or voice recording over the phone. We’re happy to make reasonable adjustments and provide other additional support to help you apply. Please contact YSHive@young.scot to arrange this or request the application in another format.

Next Steps

After you’ve applied, we will invite you along to a Taster & Selection Workshop on Zoom on Saturday 27th February.

This is to give you a taste of what volunteering with us might be like, and for us to meet you.

If you can’t attend, we will arrange a phone or video call with you.

If we have more applicants than there are spots on the Youth Volunteering Legacy Group, we will also reflect on how things went at the Taster & Selection Day to make a decision about who to invite to join the Panel.

Successful applicants will be invited to an induction day which will be confirmed following the Taster & Selection workshop.
