SYP By election January 23

Information about the SYP By-election taking place in East Lothian in January 2023

The Scottish Youth Parliament (SYP) has elected representatives from across the country. The main election will be in November 2023, but due to Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament (MSYP) stepping down in the east Lothian constituency, there will be a by election to choose two new MSYPs. All young people aged 11 or more living, working or going to school in this area are eligible to vote.

This election is for the East Lothian constituency, whihc has a similar boundary, but not quite the same as the East Lothian Local authority area (Musselburgh comes within the Midlothian North and Musselburgh constituency) – find out more about the constituency boundary at this Scottish Government Site

How to Vote:

Vote using your Young Scot National Entitlement Card number at from 08.00 on Monday 23rd January to 14:00 on 31st January.

If you do not have a Young Scot National Entitlement Card then you can request a temporary number from the local youth work team by email

Once you have logged in using your number or a temporary number you will be presented with this election (it should be the only choice at this time)

The election runs on the Single Transferable Vote (STV) system. Youn can pick just one candidate, or you can rank as many candidates as you like in order 1,2,3… etc. Note that you cannot pick one candidate as your first pick and then rank two or more candidates as your second pick, all picks need to be in numerical order. A common error is to try and rank one candidate, and then everyone else as a second pick – if this is what you want to do, then you should only select your first candidate and submit your vote at that stage.

Even though two candidates will be elected, you can still vote for just one if you like.

The candidates:

  • Finlay McIlwraith
  • Angus Johnston-Smith
  • Katie Fairfull
  • Anna Brown

You can find in depth information about each of the candidates on the SYP website
