There's been a lot of media coverage of so-called legal highs, but how are they made and what is in them?
So called legal highs are chemicals made to mimic the effects of illegal drugs. They are substances tweaked to avoid the law. Most of them are manufactured or man-made, but some are made from naturally occurring materials. But even those that claim to be natural ‘herbal’ materials are just bits and pieces of plants that have been sprayed with NPS chemicals.
The law changed in 2016, and so-called 'legal highs' are now illegal. Possessing these substances with the intent to supply (sell them to other people), offering to supply (like giving some to your mates) or importing legal highs (buying them from internet sites based abroad to be delivered here) can mean you can get up to 7 years in prison and/or a fine.
