Your mental health is just as important as your physical health and that's why its so vital you look after it. Try these five steps to help you take better care of your mental wellbeing.
1. Connect with People
Staying in touch with your friends and family can help to make you feel better within yourself, and something as simple as having a chat with a loved one can lift your spirits.
Check in with friends. Its easy to lose touch with people when we lead such busy lives, but catching up with friends can do your mental wellbeing the world of good.
Join a local club or youth group, this will allow you to make connections with people who are interested in the same things as you.
2. Be Active
We all know that being active is great for our physical health, but it is also shown to be excellent for our mental health too! There are many different ways to get some extra physical activity into our lives, giving you lots of options to choose from. You could try:
Giving something back can be very rewarding for you, and has the added benefit of making a positive difference to the world around you too!
Volunteer for a cause you're passionate about. You could volunteer for a local charity, food bank, or organisation you feel would benefit from your time. If you need some more inspiration on why you should volunteer, have a read of 8 reasons to volunteer.
Do some fundraising for a charity of your choice. You could do a sponsored walk, run or cycle, or something a little more adventurous like a sky dive or a bungee jump!
Small acts of kindness can make a big difference too. This could be as simple as complementing someone on their hair or clothes, but could make someone's day and make you feel good in the process.
4. Learn New Things
Learning something new is a good way to boost your confidence, give you a sense of achievement and can be a good way to meet new people too. You can learn new things in all sorts of ways.
Read a good book or the newspaper. Both will provide you with pieces of new information.
Take up a new hobby, or join a class to learn something new. This gives you an opportunity to find something new you enjoy and meet new people at the same time. Learning something new can boost your wellbeing and self-confidence.
Challenge yourself to make something. This could be cooking a new recipe, making someone a homemade gift or helping to build up that new piece of furniture. You'll feel an amazing sense of satisfaction when you're done, with something to show for your hard work.
5. Take Notice of the World Around You
Paying attention to the everyday and reminding yourself to take notice of the world around you can help you feel more present in the moment.
Take notice of how your friends and family are feeling or acting, and ask how they are doing.
Try out a new café for lunch instead of your usual choices. Trying somewhere new will make you notice your surroundings more and get you out of the 'autopilot' mode we can sometimes find ourselves in.
Take up mindfulness with breathing exercisesand meditation. These can be a great way to relax and de-stress, and help you to be present in the now.
