How to Get Motivated and Make Things Happen

Motivation, hard work, and understanding your strengths could be the key to getting what you want!

Motivation is the drive that allows you to go after what you want in life, but this alone doesn’t make you successful. You’ll need to understand where your strengths lie and be prepared for some hard work along the way. This is the real recipe for success!

Play to Your Strengths

The difficult part is that ‘hard work’ doesn’t always sound the most appealing. Sometimes we simply don’t want to put the effort in.

Be honest; we all try for an easy life! It feels much better to press snooze on your alarm rather than face getting up to look for a job, it is tempting to search for the latest diet fad when losing weight rather than getting those trainers out, so why bother? Because you will fail otherwise! 

Maybe not in the short term; you may lose a bit of weight following the latest diet trend, but fad diets are hard to maintain and you will have to compete with hunger pangs and cravings. You will find yourself thinking ‘is it really worth it!’ The best way to live a healthier lifestyle is to follow a balanced diet with plenty of exercise.

So, how do we develop motivation in life? This isn’t an easy question to answer as we are all different, but these tips should help!

Find Out What Motivates You

We are all different so a key to keeping motivated is to find out what you are motivated by; it may be success, a sense of achievement or giving yourself a treat every once in a while.

Focus Small

Sometimes concentrating on completing small achievable targets can help keep you motivated.

Kat, 25, from Glasgow tells us what helped her!

“When I was applying for jobs, I would set myself mini targets. I would set goals around when I should have my CV completed by or when I should have my applications finished. I found that by focusing on small victories, I was able to meet my deadlines. I always rewarded myself with some chocolate too, which always helped keep me focused!”

Remember take confidence from the little wins and let them spur you on for your larger goals. 

Visualise It

Writing down your goal on a piece of paper or keep a picture of something that inspires you can help you focus! If you’re struggling to focus on your coursework, pop a pic of your fave college/uni next to it. Find what works for you and try it!

“When I was learning to drive I would visualise driving my favourite car, I even put up a picture of it in the bathroom, so when I was brushing my teeth in the morning it would be the first thing that I saw, I think it really helped keep me focussed during my lessons!”

Block Out the Bad Stuff

If you feel that you are being distracted from your goal by a problem that doesn’t seem to go away, ask yourself what you can do to change this. 

If you feel like your mobile phone is distracting you, leave it in a different room while you study!

There may be days where you struggle, but don’t let that stop you all together. Remember we’re only human and we all have our off days, but if you keep positive, you will succeed.
