Five Ways to Look After Your Wellbeing During Pregnancy

Looking after your mental wellbeing is always important, and especially in the potentially overwhelming time before you become a new parent.

1. Be kind to yourself

Take time for yourself every day. Even little things can add up, and have you feeling refreshed. You could: 

  • Have a relaxing soak in a bubble bath 
  • Read a book with a cup of tea 
  • Watch your favourite film or TV show 

There are so many ways you could make time for yourself every day, and how you do this is really up to you but it is important that you do so. Making time for self-care isn’t selfish or unnecessary, its crucial for positive wellbeing and is particularly important when you're pregnant. 

2. Gentle exercise  

Exercise during pregnancy is safe to do, and can be extremely beneficial for you, your baby and your labour too. Any activity that makes you warm and a little out of breath counts. You could try being more active in the things you do every day by walking a little quickerwalking up and down stairs, or you could try an activity like yoga or swimming.   

Being active during pregnancy can make you feel good because it releases endorphins which help to reduce feelings of anxiety and increase your wellbeing!

3. Spend some time with loved ones  

Spending time with the people you love can do wonders for your wellbeing. Being around people you are relaxed with can help you to feel good about yourself and remind you what a great bunch of supportive people you have in your life.  

Your family and friends can be great sources of help if you feel you need it, and they're likely to offer an ear to listen to you talk about anything that’s on your mind too!

4. Meet other pregnant women and new parents  

While your friends and family can be a great support, they may not have gone through the same things you are in terms of pregnancy or becoming new parents. It can be nice to meet some other people who understand what you’re going through and are experiencing some of the same things. By sharing these experiences with others, it can remind you that you're not alone in this, and help you to build up a wider support network 

One way to do this is to join an online forum specifically for young parents, like the BBC Family News Teen Parent  Group, on Facebook. Ping is also a great resource to get information about being young parents in Scotland, and to hear about the experiences of others.

5. Mindfulness   

Mindfulness helps you to be fully present in the moment, and aware of your thoughts, feelings and surroundings. The technique teaches you to pay attention to your thoughts and feelings without thinking that there is a right or wrong way to think or feel in any moment. 

There are lots of ways to practice mindfulness which can help to make you more relaxed when you’re feeling overwhelmed or stressed about the future.  

You could try focusing on what your senses are telling you. Thinking about what you can hear, smell, touch, taste and see can be enough to ground you in the present moment and help to stop your mind racing ahead of you. Mindfulness can also help you to connect with your unborn baby.
