Hello, my name’s Anna! I’m 15 years old and I’m from Edinburgh. I recently did a work experience week with Young Scot and it was definitely an experience! Turning up on Monday morning I was filled with nerves and excitement.
I arrived at about 9.15am to go to their Monday Morning Mass Meeting (MMMM) and I was relieved to find that the office was filled with lots of friendly faces. My Monday and Tuesday were spent mainly researching and preparing for a conference on the Wednesday and Thursday. Throughout this all I was guided by Maggie Tam, who couldn’t have been nicer.
The conference was great! Although getting there on Wednesday morning turned out to be quite an experience. Whilst we were at the conference, myself and Maggie went to a few different workshops, including an eye-opening one about female genital mutilation and other harmful tradition practices (FGM and HTPs). We got to hear some inspirational people talk and we even were on a panel discussion!
These inspirational people were only a few years older than me and included; Jodie McEwan the women’s homeless world cup assistant coach who was homeless and riddled with addiction but managed to turn her life around with hard work, campaigners from TIE (Time for Inclusive Education) who were campaigning for homosexual, bisexual and transgender equality and Jonathan Benjamin who was campaigning for mental health equality after suffering with mental health problems and nearly committed suicide but was stopped by a stranger who he was later reunited with, #FindMike aka Neil. I even got a selfie with Jonathan Benjamin, which is on the Young Scot Twitter page!
Going to speak at the panel discussion I was so nervous but I managed to get through it! On Friday I worked on the Young Scot Snapchat on tips for making friends and conversation starters with Finlay, who was also on work experience, as well as doing some training on CPR.
I enjoyed my week so much and I am so glad I got to work beside someone so smart and kind like Maggie was. If I could I would do it all again!!
