Body Image and Self-Esteem By Ellie Prouse

I found this article on Body image and self-esteem on this website https://kidshealth.org/en/teens/body-image.html and I thought I could do my own version.

There are lots of people who are not happy with some of their looks. But, when you start to think what you don’t like about yourself, it can really bring down your self-esteem. You don’t need to have a perfect body to have a good body image. When you start to like your body image as it is, then it will boost your body image and your self-esteem.

You might be thinking ‘but what if I need to be in better shape?’ People think that when they are in better shape then they will like their body. But it is better to start the other way. Accept your body first. Find things about your body that you like. Take good care of your body. When you have finally decide that you like your body then it is easier to treat your body right.

Accept your Body. Nobody is perfect. Everyone wants to be liked and accepted as they are and that includes your body too! See your body the way it is. Be less critic about your body. Don’t body shame yourself. When you say harsh comments about your body, it brings down your self-esteem. Doesn’t matter if you say it out loud or think about it, it will always bring down your self-esteem. It is just as bad as someone else saying it to you. Respect yourself and your body. People are always putting their body down. Tell yourself what you like about your body instead of saying what you don’t like about your body.

Like your body. Find things that you like about your looks. It can be your hair, face or even your hands. It can be about your shape, shoulder or legs. It can be your eyes or your smile. Sometime it helps if you tell yourself what you like about yourself and why. Your friends are always there to tell you how you look if you are stuck of thinking of something. Accept those thing, whether you said it or your friends said it. Focus on what your body can do. Your body is action when you play a sport, walk, run, dance, and swim. Your body is there for you when you stretch, reach, climb or jump. Be aware of your body. When you are breathing learn to breathe calmly and slowly. When your body needs food and rest listen to it.

Take care of your body. Eat healthy food. When you are eating really well, it helps give you energy and it can even increase your body image. When you decide to treat your body right then you start to feel really good about yourself. Getting sleep. Get the sleep you’re needing for whatever age you are. Try and go to bed when you are meant to. Turn off your electronic devices before going to bed, 30 minutes before at least. Be active every day. You need to make sure that your body is healthy. For being active you can play a sport or you walk, run, dance, swimming etc. Pick something active that you will love to do every day. Keep to a healthy weight. When you have a healthy weight it will be good for you and you feel good about your body. If you are thinking you want to go on a diet talk to a parent or doctor as you might take your diet too far. Your doctor can be much help as they can tell you what weight is right for you.

Sometime body image and self-esteem can become too much to handle all by yourself. If you have health issues, depression or trauma it can affect you as you are confused how you feel about yourself. If your body image and self-esteem is really bad talk to a doctor or therapist and tell them what you are going through and they will help you through it. Body image and self-esteem can get better if you get help and take care of your body.
