Dylan on How He Got Into Climate Activism

Dylan, a volunteer on Young Scot’s COP26 Climate Co-design group shares how he got into climate activism and what it’s involved so far.

How I got into climate activism

I think I’ve really always had an interest in climate activism because my school did have a kinda economics class. In fact, my school was actually an EcoSchool, as it happens. Also, I have thought about climate change a lot during the past year with COVID19 and all the work I’ve seen around it. In particular, I also actually took part in this course with an arts organisation I’m involved with called ImpactArts from September to December 2020 called Creative Pathways. It involved work around the environment. In particular, we did a comic of a robot dog named Spot and it is actually on the Impact Arts website

I think it’s great that a lot of people are doing a lot of environmental work, arguably more than there has ever been, as, not to sound preachy or anything, but, many of us realise we cannot ignore this problem any longer. I’ve been volunteering for Young Scot’s COP26 Climate-co-Design group for the last two months and I’m a member of The Local Champions Working Group.  Asides from the Zoom calls, I’ve been involved in two external opportunities with the Codesign Group; so far meeting The US Ambassador Philip Reeker At The US Embassy and, more recently meeting Clare Haughey MSP, Minister for Children and Young People. She was really keen to meet with us to hear about the work of the Co-design-group and to hear our general thoughts about climate change. As well as having a chat with Clare, we also got our photos taken and filmed by STV News.  Two people from the group, Samantha and Stewart, were actually interviewed by the crew, but they did film all of us for a bit to use as these kinda filler clips in-between the news anchor introducing the segment and the interviews with, different individuals involved that usually has the reporter talking over it just to I guess give the viewers a bit of context about the segment.

I’ve also been volunteering for COP26, for the past 10 months. I’m also volunteering at Edinburgh’s Rail-hub, so I’ll basically be helping delegates get, to their trains. But also I want to do as much as I can to combat climate change.

What I’m hoping COP26 will achieve is all the world leaders can come to some agreement, to an effective agreement on a solution for climate change all around the world.
