National Minimum Wage in Working

An employer must pay their workers a minimum amount as defined by law. This is called the National Minimum Wage.

How much am I entitled to?

There are different levels for the National Minimum Wage, which depend on your age and whether you are an apprentice.

National Minimum Wage Rates from October 2016

  • £3.40 for an apprentice
  • £4.00 for under 18s

  • £5.50 for for 18-20 year olds

  • £6.95 for 21-24 year olds

  • £7.20 for 25+ (referred to as the ‘national living wage’)

Living Wage in Scotland

The Living Wage in Scotland is £8.25 an hour for everyone. This differs from the Minimum Wage, which can sometimes be referred to as the 'National Living Wage'.

The Living Wage in Scotland is a voluntary rate, which is independently calculated, that rises every year in November.

If you work for an accredited Living Wage employer you should receive the Living Wage if you are 18 and over.
